Bill Clinton testified before lawmakers on Friday, stating that he did not have any concerns when he spent time with Jeffrey Epstein. This closed-door testimony marked the first instance of a current or former president being compelled to testify before Congress. Democrats pushed for President Donald Trump to be subpoenaed as well, but the Republican committee chairman, James Comer, opposed this idea.
Both Clinton and Trump had social interactions with Epstein before his 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. They have consistently denied witnessing any sex trafficking evidence and have not faced accusations of criminal involvement related to Epstein. During his testimony, Clinton emphasized that he would not have associated with Epstein if he had known about the alleged trafficking of underage girls, and he would have reported it.
Clinton mentioned that he flew on Epstein’s plane a few times in the early 2000s, and photos with redacted faces were included in millions of documents released by the Justice Department. Comer described the hearing as pleasant and highlighted Clinton’s cooperation.
Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton’s wife, also testified, denying any recollection of meeting Epstein and asserting no knowledge of his criminal activities. There were concerns about the consistency in some of her responses, with potential perjury implications. The possibility of subpoenaing Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who visited Epstein’s island post-conviction, is being considered.
Democrats criticized the investigation for not examining Trump’s involvement. Trump, who distanced himself from Epstein before his conviction, faced accusations regarding his association with Epstein. The Justice Department is reviewing records related to allegations of Trump’s misconduct with an underage woman.
Trump expressed sympathy for Clinton, stating that he disliked seeing him deposed and suggesting bias in the scrutiny. The Clintons agreed to testify near their Chappaqua residence after facing contempt threats for non-cooperation. They accused Republicans of shielding Trump from scrutiny through a partisan process.
Epstein, facing federal sex-trafficking charges, died by suicide in 2019 while in jail.
