“Government and Industry Unite to Combat Australia’s Mouse Infestation”

Date:

Australia’s government expressed concerns over a widespread mouse infestation in the western region, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with the industry to mitigate its effects on food production. Speaking from Sydney, Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the government’s apprehension regarding the escalating mouse issue, particularly in Western Australia.

Reports from local media indicated that mice, a recurring challenge in Australian grain-producing areas, have overrun farms in Western Australia’s wheatbelt state. This surge prompted grain growers to issue warnings of potential crop damage in April, urging for increased availability of more potent mouse-control measures.

Bowen reaffirmed the government’s dedication to partnering with industry stakeholders to alleviate the crisis’s impact on domestic and international food supplies. He acknowledged the complexities of managing a mouse plague, recognizing the significant hardships it imposes on farmers, industries, and governmental bodies.

Australia, a key global wheat exporter, faced its most severe mouse infestation in 1993. During that period, the rodents ravaged vast swathes of crops and posed threats to livestock in pig and poultry farms, as documented by the country’s scientific agency.
