With the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election on the horizon, Actors Equity Bangladesh has made it clear that it will not be held accountable for the political engagements of its members.
In a statement released jointly by Actors’ Equity President Azad Abul Kalam and General Secretary Rashed Mamunur Rahman on Saturday, the organization emphasized its non-political and professional welfare-focused nature. The statement highlighted that any member who chooses to involve themselves in political activities, express political views, or share political or aggressive content on social media does so at their own discretion.
The announcement reiterated that such actions by individual members do not reflect the policies, stance, or functioning of Actors Equity Bangladesh. The organization explicitly stated it would not take responsibility for any political statements, campaigns, or incendiary content associated with its name, logo, or identity. It urged all members to refrain from utilizing the organization’s identity for political purposes and emphasized the expectation of cooperation in this regard.
Azad Abul Kalam, speaking to Prothom Alo, mentioned a recent incident where a member linked the Equity’s name to a political campaign. He emphasized that while members have the right to engage in politics, they should refrain from using the Equity’s name, logo, or identity in any political undertakings.
This clarification from Actors Equity Bangladesh comes amidst a tense election period in Bangladesh, where public figures’ political affiliations and social media activities are under heightened scrutiny. The statement reinforces the organization’s position as a neutral professional entity that distinguishes individual members’ actions from its institutional standpoint.
