Amazon is expanding the utilization of Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex tools across its corporate workforce, transitioning from its in-house Kiro tool. This shift was communicated via an internal memo obtained by Business Insider.
As stated in the Business Insider report, Claude Code is now accessible company-wide, while Codex is scheduled to be integrated on May 12, as announced by Jim Haughwout, Amazon’s Vice President of Software Builder Experience. These tools will run on Amazon Bedrock and will be overseen through Amazon Web Services, eliminating the need for staff to handle infrastructure setup or capacity management.
This decision marks a significant enhancement in the availability of external coding aids within Amazon. Previously, Claude Code lacked formal approval for operational use, necessitating engineers to seek special authorization. The absence of this approval had led to complaints from employees who preferred Claude Code over the company’s internal Kiro tool, as highlighted in an earlier Business Insider report. Additionally, this development underscores Amazon’s deepening collaborations with prominent AI research labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI.
