Bangladesh’s poor batting performance led to a heavy nine-wicket loss against Australia in their second Group A clash of the current ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley in Leeds. The Bangladesh team was put into bat first and struggled as they quickly found themselves at 27 for five within the initial eight overs. Despite a brief partnership of 32 runs between captain Nigar Sultana Joty, who top-scored with 27 runs off 47 balls, and Ritu Moni, who contributed 16 runs off 26 deliveries, the Tigresses never seemed likely to set a competitive target.
Bangladesh managed to reach only 77 for eight in their full 20 overs, marking their lowest-ever score against Australia in this format. Kim Garth, Sophie Molineux, and Ellyse Perry from Australia each took two wickets during the match. The Australian team, a six-time champion, then effortlessly chased down the target. Opener Georgia Voll stayed unbeaten with 45 runs from 32 balls, while Perry added an unbeaten 19 runs as Australia achieved victory in just 9.3 overs.
This dominant performance propelled Australia to the top of the Group A standings with four points from two games. On the other hand, Bangladesh, who began their campaign with a six-wicket triumph over the Netherlands, currently hold the third spot in the group with two points from two matches. Bangladesh’s next challenge will be against Pakistan at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on June 20.
