Bangladesh commences the observance of the holy month of Ramadan today, following the sighting of the new crescent moon yesterday evening. Ramadan signifies a period of fasting and spiritual purification for Muslims worldwide.
The National Moon Sighting Committee, led by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, made the decision after evaluating reports on the sighting of the Ramadan moon of 1447 Hijri from various sources. These included district administrations, the Islamic Foundation headquarters and its divisional and district offices, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation.
Taraweeh prayers commenced last night, with Shab-e-Qadr, a significant night, set to be observed nationwide on March 16, 2026.
The meeting also saw the presence of key figures such as Religious Affairs Secretary Md Kamal Uddin, Director General of the Islamic Foundation Abdus Salam Khan, and officials from various departments and organizations. Muslims are required to fast from sunrise to sunset throughout the lunar month, embodying a period of self-discipline and simplicity.
