“Bangladesh Cricket Community Surprised by Sports Adviser’s World Cup Statements”

Date:

Bangladesh’s cricket community was surprised by recent statements from Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul, seemingly deflecting blame for the country’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka onto the board and players.

In a press conference, Nazrul asserted that Bangladesh had no regrets about missing the T20 event, attributing the decision to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials and players who made a “sacrifice” for the safety of the country and its people.

This stance contradicted his earlier remarks on January 22, where he had indicated that the government’s decision not to participate in the World Cup was due to security concerns. Following a meeting with the cricketers, frustrations arose as players felt sidelined from the decision-making process.

Players, dealing with the disappointment of being excluded from the World Cup, found Nazrul’s latest comments perplexing. Some expressed their feelings anonymously, highlighting their helplessness and lack of involvement in the decision.

Within the BCB offices, some directors were also taken aback by Nazrul’s statements, with one director emphasizing that the decision was never within the board’s or players’ purview. Another official claimed that the responsibility could not be shifted onto them.

Amidst social media backlash, Nazrul later clarified his remarks, acknowledging that he had failed to communicate the situation clearly during the press conference. He reiterated that the government’s decision not to participate in the World Cup was based on security risks, with the BCB and players complying despite the associated challenges and losses.
