“Bangladesh Garment Industry Seeks Chinese Partnerships”

Date:

Bangladesh’s garment industry leaders and Chinese business representatives have agreed to explore collaborative opportunities, technology sharing, and sustainable manufacturing practices to attract more Chinese investments and enhance the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector.

The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting between the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh (OCAIB) at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.

The meeting, chaired by Inamul Haq Khan, the senior vice president of BGMEA, was attended by several BGMEA Vice Presidents. The 13-member Chinese delegation, led by OCAIB President Felix Chang WYC, included Vice Presidents Andy Chan, Cliff Ren, Lisa Lu, and Joel Wong.

Key discussions centered on areas such as potential joint ventures, improving customs procedures, sustainability initiatives, and technological advancements. The parties emphasized the importance of facilitating direct Chinese investments and partnerships in Bangladesh’s RMG sector, including reviving struggling factories through new investments or joint ownership agreements.

Efforts to streamline customs processes and promote sustainable practices, including the adoption of green technologies from China, were highlighted. Both sides also explored integrating artificial intelligence and automation in the RMG sector to align with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The OCAIB delegation expressed interest in establishing a carbon trading market and proposed an exchange program to modernize machinery in Bangladeshi sweater factories. However, concerns were raised about potential delays due to complex customs procedures, prompting the delegation to seek support from BGMEA in addressing these challenges.

In response, BGMEA leaders pledged to raise these issues with relevant authorities and expressed a commitment to facilitating partnerships between local entrepreneurs and Chinese investors. They emphasized Bangladesh’s focus on producing higher-value products and sustainable apparel, underscoring the benefits of collaborating with OCAIB to leverage China’s expertise and technologies for enhancing the global competitiveness of the RMG sector.

OCAIB President Felix Chang commended the resilience and growth of Bangladesh’s garment industry and reiterated the association’s dedication to bringing new investments and technical assistance to the sector.
