“Bangladesh Government Ensures Fear-Free Journalism Under New Cabinet”

The government, led by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, recently formed a 49-member cabinet with Zahir Uddin Swapan appointed as the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Swapan assured journalists of a fear-free journalism environment during his visit to the Secretariat today.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals, especially media professionals, living under constant surveillance, Swapan emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring media freedom in Bangladesh. He reiterated the Prime Minister’s focus on media freedom and expressed determination to establish a conducive atmosphere for journalism without fear.

In a discussion with journalists post the cabinet meeting, Swapan highlighted the government’s efforts to solidify mechanisms for the free flow of information and media freedom. Emphasizing media freedom as a core political commitment, Swapan mentioned ongoing work to refine existing mechanisms, including the review of proposals from a previous commission established during the interim government.

Swapan, along with the state minister and other officials, undertook a comprehensive review of reports to develop a practical plan for advancing media freedom initiatives. The government’s proactive approach aims to enhance transparency and support a vibrant media landscape in Bangladesh.
