The Bangladesh women’s cricket team, buoyed by their recent victory over Pakistan, set off for Manchester with hopes of advancing to the T20 World Cup semifinals. The team management is now more self-assured that their strategic gambles have paid off, especially with Shorna Akter’s pivotal 39-run contribution in the win against Pakistan. Shorna’s calculated risks provided Bangladesh with a boost as they prepare to face India in their upcoming match.
Facing a tough situation with five wickets down, Shorna’s timely cameo performance helped the team reach a decent total. By promoting her to bat later in the innings, the team allowed her to play more freely, a tactical move that proved effective. The batting coach, Nasiruddin Faruque, acknowledged the team’s need to bridge the power gap and improve fitness levels to compete with other teams in T20 cricket.
Despite being held back initially, Shorna demonstrated her prowess against pacers by intelligently building her innings. Faruque explained that the decision to have her face pace bowlers was influenced by the match-ups on the field. Shorna’s strategic stroke play, rotating the strike and hitting boundaries, showcased her ability to adapt to match situations.
The bowlers staged an impressive comeback after Pakistan’s strong start in pursuit of 124 runs, restricting them from hitting any boundaries in the final 10 overs. Bangladesh, currently ranked third in their group, secured two victories in a T20 World Cup for the first time and aspire for further success. However, they face the challenge of overcoming India’s superior run-rate, necessitating significant wins to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Faruque highlighted the team’s positive spirit and emphasized the importance of winning their remaining matches to improve their chances of qualifying. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome hurdles, likening their situation to a fast car being slowed down by minor obstacles.
