“Buddhist Monks Walk 2,300 Miles for Peace”

Date:

Dressed in vibrant burnt-orange attire, twenty-four Buddhist monks made their way to Washington, D.C., as part of a 2,300-mile “Walk for Peace.” This spiritual expedition spanning nine states has garnered immense support from large crowds along the way.

Joan Donoghue, 59, from Silver Spring, Maryland, expressed the collective sentiment saying, “People are longing for this. Our nation is in need of unity, kindness, compassion, and peace.” The monks embarked on their journey in Texas over three months ago, enduring harsh winter conditions to advocate for peace, loving-kindness, and compassion nationally and globally.

Despite encountering severe winter weather conditions in various states, including a fierce winter storm, the monks, accompanied by Aloka, a rescue dog from India known as “the Peace Dog” on social media, pressed on. Their mission comes at a critical time with escalating tensions in the United States due to President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies.

Bhikkhu Pannakara, the spiritual leader of the Walk for Peace, emphasized, “Our purpose is not to protest but to awaken the inherent peace within each individual.” The monks are in Washington for two days before concluding their journey in Annapolis, Maryland, on Thursday, having received overwhelming support on social media and from individuals who have braved adverse weather to show solidarity.

In the nation’s capital, hundreds of spectators gathered along Embassy Row to witness the monks’ procession. Many, like Coleman O’Donoghue, found solace in the monks’ presence amid the chaos prevailing in the world. The shared experience of waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the monks fostered camaraderie among onlookers.

During their stop in North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein commended the monks for instilling hope and spreading messages of peace, equality, justice, and compassion. The monks have traveled through several states, engaging with spiritual and community leaders and hosting interfaith ceremonies to promote unity and understanding.

While the journey has been largely positive, challenges have arisen, such as an unfortunate accident in Dayton, Texas, where a truck collided with the monks’ escort vehicle, resulting in injuries to several individuals. Despite setbacks, the monks remain resolute in honoring their commitment to peace and unity, advocating for a better world for all.
