“Bustling Celebrations Mark Pahela Falgun in Dhaka”

Date:

Soft sunlight, rustling leaves, and a burst of vibrant colors have ushered in Pahela Falgun in the capital city, carrying the fragrant essence of “Shimul” and “Polash” and the promise of warmer days.

Celebrations marking the first day of spring are in full swing nationwide with blooming flowers, poetry, music, and dance. The festival, deeply rooted in nature’s rebirth, seamlessly combines the transition of seasons with cultural expressions, attracting individuals of all generations.

In Dhaka, the Jatiya Basanta Utsab Udjapon Parishad organized day-long festivities in honor of “Basanta Utsab 1432”. The main event commenced at 7:30 am at the Liberation War Museum, featuring enchanting song and dance performances welcoming the arrival of the new season.

Cultural groups, students, and families gathered early in the morning, adorned in colors traditionally associated with spring. The jubilant spirit extended to daily commutes, with metro rail passengers donning floral headbands and vibrant attire en route to the festivities, while office workers swapped formal wear for colorful sarees and panjabis.

Among them, Omar Faruk and his family, dressed in shades of yellow and orange, were heading to TSC, expressing joy in celebrating the festival together on a weekend holiday.

Crowds thronged in Agargaon and Shahbagh, flocking to roadside stalls teeming with marigolds, roses, and seasonal blooms. Vendors reported brisk sales as revelers exchanged flowers with friends and family members.

Often hailed as the “king of seasons” in Bengali poetry, spring symbolizes beauty, vitality, and hope. The gentle warmth of the sun, melodious bird chirping, and soft breezes infused the city with a festive yet intimate ambiance. For many, Pahela Falgun transcends a mere date on the calendar, becoming a sensory delight — from the floral scents to the rhythmic tunes and familiar customs.

Across Dhanmondi and university campuses, young people exchanged flowers and warm greetings, mirroring the vibrant hues of the season. However, beneath the festive facade, a subtle tranquility lingered.

In Shahbagh, usually bustling during Pahela Falgun, traders noted a subdued turnout this year. The coincidence with Valentine’s Day may have hinted at increased business prospects, yet the aftermath of the recent national election left parts of the capital noticeably quieter.

Flower seller Kamrul Hasan disclosed a significant reduction in his flower stock this year, citing slower sales despite the influx of photo enthusiasts.

Similarly, helium balloon vendor Mohammad Afzal Hossain observed weaker demand for heart-shaped balloons compared to Valentine’s Day sales, reflecting a less enthusiastic response from buyers.

While shops showcased an array of flowers like gladiolus, chrysanthemum, gerbera, gypsophila, tuberose, hibiscus, and locally grown roses, with lilies priced around Tk 500 each, traders noted a decline in customer footfall compared to previous years.

Amidst this, Dr. Rubaiya Binte Wahid purchased a single rose before heading to work, lamenting the time constraint to celebrate with her husband.

At the University of Dhaka, usually a vibrant hub of Pahela Falgun festivities, visitors observed a more subdued atmosphere this year, marked by the absence of elaborate arrangements, particularly at the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Acknowledging the subdued ambiance, Tarikur Rahman Khan remarked on the diminished vibrancy attributed possibly to the recent election, sensing a slight emptiness in the air.

College student Rahat Mahmud, assisting a friend in buying flowers at Shahbagh, clarified his presence was not for Valentine’s Day celebrations but as a supportive gesture.

Despite the subdued commercial and crowd activities, the essence of Pahela Falgun endures, serving as a poignant reminder of rejuvenation, nature’s enduring strength, and the inevitability of change.
