“Canada Pledges $2M for Transparent Bangladesh Elections”

Date:

Canada has pledged $2 million to the Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh to assist in ensuring credible, inclusive, and transparent elections. Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh made this announcement today. He emphasized the importance of supporting a peaceful and stable democratic transition post-election during a press briefing at the EC’s headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin and four other commissioners.

Singh highlighted the significance of a free, fair, and inclusive election that caters to all segments of society, including youth, women, and marginalized communities like the disabled, indigenous groups, and minorities. He stressed that Canada’s support aims to enable all Bangladeshis to participate fully in the political process. Singh also emphasized the global impact of the upcoming election on February 12, stating that it is crucial for it to be conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner.

The Canadian high commissioner mentioned that Canada will have a substantial presence of election observers, with Canadians participating in both the EU and Commonwealth observer missions. He expressed optimism about how a transparent election and a peaceful democratic transition could strengthen bilateral relations and lead to a better future for both countries. Singh urged all Bangladeshis to actively engage in shaping a democratic, inclusive, and peaceful future in the coming days.

Stefan Liller, the resident representative of the UNDP in Bangladesh, acknowledged the significance of Canada’s support beyond the upcoming election. He highlighted future plans for collaboration, focusing on post-election analysis, legal framework revisions, and enhancing the Election Commission’s capacity in managing local and regional elections over the next year to year and a half.
