China has called on the United States to revoke one-sided tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump following a US Supreme Court ruling that invalidated many of his actions. The court’s decision, with a six to three majority, determined that Trump lacked the authority to enforce tariffs under a 1977 law he had used to impose sudden taxes on individual nations, disrupting global trade.
In response, Trump angrily announced a new 10 percent global tariff on imports under a different legal basis, which was subsequently increased to 15 percent. The Chinese commerce ministry stated today that it was evaluating the ruling’s impact and urged Washington to remove the tariffs, emphasizing that trade wars have no winners and that protectionism is not beneficial.
The impending 15 percent global tariffs are set to take effect soon, lasting for 150 days with certain product exemptions. China’s foreign ministry expressed vigilance regarding potential US actions to sustain heightened tariffs, mentioning that China will steadfastly protect its interests.
This warning from China precedes Trump’s upcoming visit to the country, which is scheduled to occur during his second term. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision dealing a blow to Trump’s economic policy, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer clarified that the planned meeting between Trump and Xi in April is not intended for trade disputes.
The ruling by the Supreme Court, a significant setback for Trump, challenges his trade strategy that has disrupted global commerce. Various countries are reviewing the court’s decision and monitoring Trump’s subsequent tariff pronouncements. Greer assured the media that trade agreements with China, the European Union, and other partners will remain intact despite the ruling.
In December, US trade officials threatened tariffs on the semiconductor industry due to alleged unreasonable practices by Beijing, but the implementation has been delayed until 2027. Beijing strongly opposed the threat, criticizing Washington for allegedly using tariffs to unfairly restrain Chinese industries.
