Former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has expressed his confidence in his team ahead of their crucial virtual semi-final clash against India in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. Gayle drew motivation from a historic victory of the West Indies in a previous T20 World Cup tournament against India.
Reflecting on the 2016 World T20 semi-final in Mumbai, Gayle recalled how West Indies overcame India in a thrilling match. Despite a formidable innings from Virat Kohli, where India posted 192-2, West Indies successfully chased down the target with 196-3 in 19.4 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory.
Lendl Simmons played a pivotal role in the victory with an unbeaten 82, supported by Johnson Charles’s fluent 52, guiding West Indies to triumph over a strong Indian team in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Gayle believes that history could repeat itself in the upcoming Group 1 Super Eight encounter in Kolkata, positioned as a virtual quarterfinal. With both India and West Indies holding two points each from two matches, they are both aiming to secure the additional two points needed to secure the second semifinal spot from the group, following South Africa.
Emphasizing the importance of batting in the upcoming match, Gayle highlighted that the team with the superior batting performance will emerge victorious. He expressed confidence in West Indies’ potential to succeed and predicted an intense contest, favoring his team to come out on top.
