James Van Der Beek, known for his role in the popular 1990s teen series “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at 48 after a battle with cancer, as announced by his wife on social media.

Kimberly, his wife, shared on Instagram that James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully, facing his final days with bravery and grace.

Fans and colleagues expressed their condolences on various social platforms, highlighting the impact Van Der Beek had on their lives and careers. Sarah Michelle Gellar, among others, paid tribute to his enduring legacy.

A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to raise $500,000 in support of Van Der Beek’s wife and six children. Remarkably, it garnered over $200,000 within an hour of its launch.

In 2024, Van Der Beek disclosed his colorectal cancer diagnosis, discovered a year earlier during a routine medical procedure. He shared his treatment journey and health focus on social media leading up to his passing.

Hailing from Connecticut, Van Der Beek rose to fame in the 1990s portraying Dawson Leery in “Dawson’s Creek,” alongside Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, and Katie Holmes. The series revolved around the complex dynamics of the love triangle involving Leery, an aspiring filmmaker, and his two best friends, Joey Potter and Pacey Witter.

Even after the show’s conclusion in 2003, Van Der Beek’s portrayal of Dawson made him a heartthrob of the early 2000s. Apart from “Dawson’s Creek,” he amassed a diverse portfolio with over 60 film and television credits. Notable roles include quarterback Mox in “Varsity Blues” (1999) and drug dealer Sean Bateman in “The Rules of Attraction” (2002).
