Gunfire erupted in an apartment at a historically Black university in the southern United States, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the injury of another, officials reported. This incident marks the third shooting to have occurred on the campus since October. The United States, known for its widespread availability of firearms, has a troubling history of gun violence that claims thousands of lives annually.
The shooting took place at South Carolina State University’s Hugine Suites student residential complex at approximately 9:15 pm on Thursday (0215 GMT Friday), according to the college’s official statement. ABC News mentioned that the university had experienced two previous shootings in October, one of which occurred at the same student housing complex, resulting in one fatality and another person being wounded.
As of early yesterday, the university had not disclosed the identities of the victims or the condition of the injured individual. A lockdown was imposed on the campus, as confirmed by a social media update from university officials. While it was not clarified whether anyone had been apprehended in relation to the shooting, the university announced the cancellation of Friday classes.
