The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated in a press release that they did not employ firearms or ammunition when dispersing demonstrators near the state guesthouse Jamuna and its vicinity in the capital today. The DMP emphasized that gatherings, processions, mass assemblies, and protests are prohibited in and around Jamuna to uphold law and order and safeguard the chief adviser’s security.
Despite the imposed restrictions, multiple groups with diverse demands attempted to approach Jamuna on Friday by breaching police barricades. Subsequently, police resorted to using tear gas shells and sound grenades to scatter the protesters, as reported by Talebur Rahman, the deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, in the press release.
Moreover, the DMP highlighted that some individuals have been circulating “false and misleading” information on social media platforms to divert attention from the actual issue. The police reiterated that the dispersal of protesters was conducted in a lawful manner without the use of lethal weapons or gunfire.
The press release also mentioned that several police personnel sustained injuries during the incident, while a few protesters suffered minor injuries.
