The European Central Bank has urged major European banks to develop strategies to address cybersecurity threats posed by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies.
The rise of AI models like Anthropic’s Mythos, known for its ability to pinpoint vulnerabilities in computer systems, has raised concerns among European governments and policymakers.
In a communication to the 110 institutions under its supervision, the ECB highlighted that the emergence of new AI models represents a fundamental shift in the threat landscape, rather than a temporary phenomenon.
Claudia Buch, the head of the supervisory board, emphasized that while these developments do not introduce entirely new risks, they do accelerate the speed and scale at which such risks materialize.
The ECB has instructed major institutions like Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, and Santander to present a comprehensive plan by October 31 outlining both immediate and long-term measures to enhance their cyber resilience.
Emphasizing that these initiatives must be driven from the top levels of the organizations, the ECB stressed the importance of banks’ management bodies taking responsibility for addressing the evolving cyber risk environment.
The supervisory board’s directive coincides with a warning from a European agency monitoring systemic risks about the increasing threat of “systemic cyber risks arising from cutting-edge artificial intelligence models.”
The agency cautioned that malicious actors are leveraging advanced AI models to bolster cyber-attacks, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance.
Initially, Anthropic withheld the complete version of Mythos models from the public due to concerns about potential misuse by hackers. However, a public version with built-in safety features was released last month to mitigate these risks.
