The Minister of Education, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, emphasized that cancelling exams or implementing “auto pass” due to public pressure is not a favorable approach and will not be repeated in the future. Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat on his second day in office, Milon acknowledged past decisions that were deemed undesirable, stating that the government will adhere to its election manifesto to modernize the education system.
Milon addressed concerns regarding teachers’ involvement in political activities during school hours, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on classroom teaching without engaging in protests. He assured that teachers’ grievances will be addressed through appropriate channels, discouraging the need for street demonstrations to push for demands.
Furthermore, the minister announced plans to bring English-medium schools under government regulations and expressed worries about unauthorized educational institutions operating in unsafe conditions. Milon stressed the necessity for proper safety measures in schools, highlighting the importance of providing a secure environment for students.
In addition, Milon warned against corruption within the education sector, underscoring the government’s commitment to combatting such practices. State Minister for Education Bobby Hajjaj echoed this sentiment, stating that the education budget will now be viewed as an investment rather than a cost, emphasizing the significance of education in building a skilled workforce and fostering national development.
Hajjaj outlined a 12-point policy agenda, including the government’s pledge to increase education funding to 5 percent of GDP. He highlighted the collaboration between the education and finance ministries to develop a three-year fiscal plan focusing on equitable distribution of resources and improving learning outcomes. Additionally, Hajjaj outlined a timeline for conducting budget reviews, establishing national education goals, and enhancing teacher training facilities and educational infrastructure.
The government aims to enhance digital literacy, AI awareness, and cyber safety in schools, transitioning from rote learning to more comprehensive evaluation methods. Monthly progress reports and school-level assessments will be implemented to ensure transparency and accountability within the education system.
