“Election Commission’s Mobile Phone Ban Sparks Backlash”

Date:

The Election Commission (EC) has implemented a rule prohibiting the presence of mobile phones within a 400-yard radius of polling centers during the forthcoming 13th Parliamentary Election and referendum scheduled for February 12. This directive, conveyed through a circular signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Md Shahidul Islam, was distributed to returning officers nationwide.

As per the guidelines outlined in the circular, only designated personnel including presiding officers, police in-charge, Ansar members, general Ansar or VDP personnel, and two Ansar members utilizing the Election Security 2026 application will be authorized to possess mobile phones within polling centers.

The decision has sparked criticism, particularly on social media platforms, with concerns raised regarding the potential challenges faced by journalists and election observers in performing their duties if restricted from using phones near polling venues. The absence of specific provisions in the circular addressing this issue has fueled skepticism among the public.

The ban has been denounced as unnecessary, restrictive, and detrimental to transparency by many individuals. A Facebook user highlighted that such a restriction could hinder citizens from documenting any irregularities that may occur during the electoral process.

Numerous voices have called for the withdrawal of this decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining openness and accountability during the electoral proceedings.
