A man sustained gunshot wounds in Brahmanbaria on Monday evening, while a residence was set ablaze in Narail early the following day due to conflicts related to the recent elections.
In Brahmanbaria, 24-year-old Emon Miah, residing in Thollakandi village under Nabinagar upazila, was attacked by a group of 14-15 armed individuals who fired three bullets at him near his home around 7:45 pm on Monday. According to Emon’s elder brother Toufiqul Islam, the assailants arrived on CNG-run auto-rickshaws, shot Emon, and swiftly fled the scene.
Allegedly, Emon, a supporter of the unsuccessful independent candidate Kazi Nazmul Hossain Taposh in Brahmanbaria-5, faced opposition from followers of the victorious BNP lawmaker Abdul Mannan. Toufiqul claimed that Emon was a witness in a prior clash that resulted in two fatalities last November.
Emon was promptly taken to a local hospital, where medical professionals recommended transferring him to Dhaka for specialized care.
When reached for comment, Abdul Mannan MP stated he was unaware of the incident, suggesting it could be linked to internal conflicts between criminal factions rather than his election campaign.
Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Shah Md Abdur Rauf verified the incident and mentioned that the police were actively investigating the matter.
In Narail, the residence of Humayun Molla, the president of the BNP unit in Hobkhali union, was set on fire in Bill-Dumurtala village under Sadar upazila early the next day.
Humayun’s family members revealed that he supported Monirul Islam, an unsuccessful independent candidate in Narail-2, and had been facing opposition from Riazul Islam Tinku, the former president of the union’s BNP unit who backed the defeated BNP-nominated candidate Fariduzzaman Farhad.
During the early hours at around 1:00 am, unidentified perpetrators set the house ablaze as a result of the ongoing feud. Although crops, furniture, and household items were destroyed, no injuries were reported.
Riazul Islam Tinku refuted the accusations, claiming neither he nor his supporters were involved in the incident.
A case has been registered in connection with the arson, but as of yesterday evening, no arrests had been made, according to Narail Sadar Police Station OC Md Oli Miah.
Ataur Rahman, the candidate nominated by Jamaat-e-Islami, emerged victorious in the constituency’s election.
