Ask.com, previously known as Ask Jeeves, has been closed down, marking the end of an early attempt at conversational search on the internet. The platform officially ended its operations on May 1, as announced on its website.
According to a statement released by the platform, “As IAC refines its focus, we have decided to discontinue our search business, including Ask.com. After 25 years of addressing the world’s inquiries, Ask.com officially shut down on May 1, 2026.”
Ask Jeeves, established in the 1990s, stood out by enabling users to ask questions using natural language, a pioneering approach that hinted at the interaction styles now prevalent in contemporary artificial intelligence systems. Despite its initial innovation, the platform faced challenges in staying relevant as competitors rapidly expanded.
IAC acquired the service in 2005 and subsequently dropped the “Jeeves” branding. Throughout its existence, Ask.com operated in the shadow of Google, whose search dominance transformed user expectations and market dynamics.
