European Nations Attribute Navalny’s Death to Poison Dart Frog Toxin

Date:

Five European nations, which include the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have jointly stated that Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was assassinated using a rare toxin from a poison dart frog, with the Russian government as the primary suspect. Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, died in a Russian penitentiary on February 16, 2024, while serving a 19-year prison term.

In a unified declaration presented at the Munich Security Conference, the UK, Sweden, France, Germany, and The Netherlands asserted their conviction that Navalny was poisoned with a deadly substance. Laboratory assessments of samples from his body revealed the presence of epibatidine, a toxin commonly found in the skin of South American dart frogs, according to the European nations.

The countries dismissed Russia’s claim that Navalny’s demise was due to natural causes, citing the high toxicity of epibatidine and reported symptoms as strong indicators of poisoning as the cause of death. They highlighted that Navalny was under incarceration, providing Russia with the opportunity and means to administer the poison.

British authorities separately emphasized that only the Russian state possessed the means, motive, and opportunity to utilize such a lethal substance. They unequivocally held Russia accountable for Navalny’s death. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended Navalny’s bravery and condemned Putin’s alleged intentions in a social media post.

The Kremlin has refrained from responding to the allegations, while Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson and Moscow’s embassy in London have dismissed the Western report. In 2024, Putin acknowledged Navalny’s passing just before a presidential election in Russia.

Yulia Navalnya, Navalny’s widow, described the revelation as scientifically proven evidence that her husband was murdered by the Kremlin. She expressed her certainty that Putin was responsible for her husband’s death, emphasizing the transformation of her past assertions into verified facts.

The UK Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, who met Navalnya at the Munich conference, underscored the exposure of the Kremlin’s alleged scheme to stifle Navalny’s voice. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot paid tribute to Navalny, while Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard praised the collaborative effort to unveil the truth and hold Russia answerable.

The European nations reported Russia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons over the findings, expressing concerns about Russia’s alleged breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Navalny had previously survived poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok in 2020 and continued his activism against Putin’s regime despite facing imprisonment and persecution.

Navalny, a charismatic anti-corruption activist, had garnered significant support in Russia, leading large-scale protests against the government. His imprisonment and subsequent demise have sparked international condemnation and renewed scrutiny of Putin’s administration.
