National Film Award-winning filmmaker Shahnewaz Kakoli is currently undergoing an extended medical treatment after suffering a stroke, as confirmed by her husband, actor Pran Roy. According to Roy, the treatment process is ongoing, and the duration for her full recovery remains uncertain.
Following the stroke, Kakoli experienced paralysis, leading to a continuous three-and-a-half-month treatment regimen. Presently, she is undergoing regular therapeutic sessions but still faces challenges in walking and moving her left arm and leg. Additionally, she grapples with severe hand pain, which medical professionals are actively addressing. While she struggles to sit up unaided, she can now be slightly mobilized with the help of a stretcher or wheelchair, showcasing some progress.
Kakoli is presently receiving care at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) hospital in Mirpur, Dhaka, where she undergoes multiple therapies daily. However, due to the prolonged treatment required, expenses are mounting. Roy highlighted the ongoing financial strain related to the daily therapy and medical costs, emphasizing the collective support received from friends, well-wishers, and family to navigate these challenges.
In a bid to cover medical expenses, Roy disclosed that he had to sell his personal car since his work has been disrupted due to his wife’s illness. Reflecting on their past financial decisions, Roy expressed regret over not saving more for unforeseen circumstances. While Actors Equity Bangladesh offered some assistance, other industry organizations have not extended similar support consistently.
Despite the financial strain, Roy expressed a preference to exhaust personal resources before seeking state aid. He indicated that formal communication with the government or relevant authorities had not yet occurred, highlighting the intention to explore all options independently before considering state assistance.
Notably, Kakoli’s latest film, “From Bangladesh,” was near completion before her illness, with only minor editing pending. However, due to external circumstances, the editing process has been delayed. Roy mentioned that releasing the film could have provided some financial relief during this challenging period.
In 2012, Shahnewaz Kakoli made her directorial debut with “Uttorer Sur,” which garnered critical acclaim domestically and internationally, earning the National Film Award in multiple categories, including Best Film and Best Story.
