A wave of fires targeting properties owned by Hindu community members in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram has stirred fear among residents.
According to locals and police, several houses were deliberately set ablaze in the Dhar Para area of Jafrabad village under Wahedpur union. Fortunately, no casualties have been recorded so far.
Mirsarai police have confirmed two separate fire incidents and are actively investigating the matter to uncover the motives behind these acts.
Residents and victims have stated that these incidents occurred between January 23 and January 29, spanning from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, with at least six to seven fires reported during this period.
Witnesses have mentioned that most fires targeted haystacks, as well as stored dry leaves and firewood near residential properties.
Officer-in-Charge Farida Yeasmin of Mirsarai Model Police Station mentioned, “The culprits behind these incidents remain unknown at this time. The most recent fire incident occurred on January 29 at the residence of an individual named Mridul. We have engaged with local Hindu community leaders to provide them with police assistance and support.”
In addition to the confirmed incidents, locals have claimed that fires were observed near the residences of two other individuals, heightening the sense of unease among the community members. Some residents have expressed suspicions of intentional targeting, stating that they have installed CCTV cameras to identify the responsible parties.
