An explosion at a fireworks store in eastern China resulted in eight fatalities and two injuries, as confirmed by authorities on Sunday. In rural areas of China, it is common for communities to use sparklers and loud fireworks to mark special occasions like the upcoming Lunar New Year festivities. The blast, caused by the improper handling of fireworks by local villagers, occurred in Jiangsu province’s Donghai county around 2:30 pm on Sunday.
Following the incident, emergency response teams from various departments swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. By 4:00 pm, the fire triggered by the explosion had been extinguished. While eight individuals lost their lives, two others sustained minor burns. The authorities have apprehended those deemed responsible for the tragic event, with investigations already underway.
With the Lunar New Year approaching, the Ministry of Emergency Management cautioned the public about the risks associated with fireworks usage, urging against unsafe practices like test-firing or smoking near firework vendors. Additionally, a nationwide directive was issued to all fireworks companies to conduct thorough safety assessments to mitigate potential hazards.
China has a history of industrial accidents attributed to inadequate safety protocols. Notably, a recent explosion at a biotech facility in Shanxi province claimed eight lives, while a similar incident at a steel plant in Inner Mongolia led to the death of at least nine individuals in late January.
