During the final days of the interim government, Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain emphasized that the trade and defense agreements being finalized are intended to facilitate the incoming government without imposing any burdens. Speaking during a media briefing at the foreign ministry, Hossain highlighted recent developments in international relations.
On January 27, an agreement was reached between the Bangladesh Air Force and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation International for the establishment of a drone manufacturing and assembly plant, along with technology transfer. Subsequently, on February 3, Bangladesh and Japan signed a deal focusing on the transfer of defense equipment and technology to enhance the modernization of the Bangladesh defense sector.
A prospective Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan is on the horizon, while a trade deal with the US is anticipated before the upcoming election. Hossain mentioned that ongoing negotiations with the US have resulted in a reduction of tariffs from 37 percent to 20 percent, aiming to align with the tariff rates of neighboring countries like India and Pakistan at 18 percent.
Hossain clarified that the agreements with Japan and other nations were the result of long-standing initiatives that have been meticulously pursued over the past year or more. He emphasized the importance of fostering smooth relationships with neighboring countries, particularly India, underlining the significance of mutual respect and shared interests in advancing diplomatic ties.
Addressing concerns about decision-making autonomy within the foreign ministry, Hossain acknowledged that independence wanes once a government transition occurs, noting that internal tensions are inherent in governance. Commenting on visa challenges faced by Bangladeshis, he attributed these issues to systemic factors such as document fraud, stressing that addressing these issues requires collective efforts beyond the foreign ministry’s scope.
Regarding recent incidents of mob violence, particularly the attacks on prominent media outlets like The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, Hossain unequivocally condemned such actions as unjustifiable and deserving of strong condemnation. He reiterated the importance of upholding law and order to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all citizens.
