Salehuddin Ahmed, a former executive director of BRAC and ex pro vice-chancellor of BRAC University, has passed away in the United States during medical treatment at the age of 79. His death occurred at 11:00 am yesterday according to Bangladesh time.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and numerous well-wishers. Salehuddin also held the position of former managing editor at The Daily Star.
After obtaining his PhD in Ukraine in 1978, he returned to Bangladesh and began his career as a research officer at the Planning Commission. He joined BRAC on April 4, 1979, as an executive assistant and remained with the organization until 2004. Subsequently, from 2005 to 2009, he served as the pro vice-chancellor of BRAC University and was also a member of BRAC’s General Body.
BRAC has expressed deep sorrow over Salehuddin’s passing, stating, “During this challenging time, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and well-wishers,” in a post on its Facebook page. The organization highlighted Salehuddin’s extensive career in development philosophy, poverty reduction, and educational growth, which significantly impacted Bangladesh’s development landscape. The post also mentioned that his longstanding and close professional relationship with founder Fazle Hasan Abed greatly enriched BRAC’s journey.
