Former DGFI Chief Sheikh Mamun Khaled Remanded

Date:

Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former head of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), has been placed on a five-day remand following a court proceeding in Dhaka related to the killing of furniture trader Mohammad Delowar Hossain during the 2024 July Uprising.

The court session, which took place in a crowded courtroom, saw Mamun Khaled mostly silent but visibly tense. Despite being handcuffed on his right wrist, he remained attentive and composed, occasionally raising his hand and engaging with his lawyer during the defense’s statements.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddique Azad presided over the hearing after Mamun Khaled was escorted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court amid tight security. The investigating officer requested a seven-day remand, which was supported by Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, who highlighted Mamun Khaled’s alleged involvement in the events surrounding the July Uprising and the 1/11 army-backed caretaker government.

Defense attorney Nazrul Islam Khan argued for bail, asserting Mamun Khaled’s innocence in the killing. Mamun Khaled himself challenged the prosecution’s claims, pointing out his support for the July Uprising and denying any role in the incident.

He also defended his tenure at the DGFI, addressing accusations related to detentions and torture during his leadership. Mamun Khaled emphasized his presence in the country, refuting any involvement in criminal activities and highlighting his return from the United Kingdom to support his daughter’s education.

After considering all arguments, the magistrate granted a five-day remand for further investigation. The case, initiated by Mohammad Delowar Hossain’s widow Liza last year, involves multiple suspects, including Mamun Khaled, in connection with Delowar’s fatal shooting during the 2024 July Uprising in Mirpur-10.
