France and the UK are set to hold a joint summit this week to address a unified, international strategy to protect maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz, as declared by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday. Starmer mentioned that Britain had gathered over 40 countries with a common goal of reinstating free navigation, and the summit aims to explore means of ensuring the safety of shipping post-conflict resolution.
In alignment with these efforts, French President Emmanuel Macron, earlier in the day, highlighted plans for a peaceful multinational mission developed jointly by Britain and France, which would operate independently from the conflicting parties in the region. The initiative comes in response to the escalated tensions triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, leading to a widespread conflict that severely disrupted traffic flow through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for global oil and gas transportation.
Despite recent attempts at a ceasefire, including discussions in Pakistan over the weekend that concluded unsuccessfully, US President Donald Trump issued orders for a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz commencing on Monday. Trump hinted at the involvement of other nations in this blockade without providing specific details on the countries participating.
In contrast, the collaborative effort between the UK and France, announced by Macron and Starmer, seems to be a distinct initiative from Trump’s announced blockade. A diplomatic meeting led by the UK involving around 40 nations on April 2 demanded the immediate reopening of the essential shipping route. Macron emphasized the involvement of countries willing to contribute to a joint peaceful mission focused on restoring navigation freedom in the strait, separate from the conflicting parties.
The US military confirmed that Trump’s ordered blockade would start at 1400 GMT, impacting all vessels destined for or departing from Iranian ports along the strait. However, Starmer clarified on Monday that Britain would not partake in the naval blockade directed by Trump.
