At least 18 supporters and members of the BNP party were injured due to an explosion caused by gas balloons in a room in Tongi, Gazipur this evening. The injured individuals were promptly transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery located in Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 4:00 pm inside a club room adjacent to the Sena Kalyan Garments building at Tongi Bazar, as reported by witnesses and party affiliates. Md Rabiul Islam, a supporter of BNP candidate M Manjurul Karim Rony in Gazipur-2, mentioned that a rally was planned to take place in Tongi’s Cherag Ali area later in the day.
Before the rally commenced, party leaders and supporters congregated in a club room within the Sena Kalyan Market vicinity. Some attendees entered the room to retrieve gas balloons, which had been prepared earlier for the event.
Rabiul explained, “The balloons unexpectedly exploded, causing a rapid spread of fire. Those present in the room sustained burn injuries.” The injured individuals were initially treated at a local hospital and subsequently transferred to Dhaka via ambulance.
Upon reaching the burn institute’s emergency department, it was reported that at least 18 individuals with burn injuries had been admitted. The majority of the victims suffered burns on their hands, faces, and other parts of their bodies.
