Google has rolled out Android 17, the latest update to its mobile operating system, starting from June 16, 2026, for a variety of Pixel devices.
The update is now accessible for Pixel 6 to Pixel 10 series smartphones, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Other manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, and Xiaomi are anticipated to release their versions in the coming months.
One highlight of the update is the enhanced Bubbles feature, which can now be utilized with any application. By long-pressing an app icon, users can transform it into a compact, movable window that floats above other tasks. On larger devices such as foldables, bubbles are conveniently grouped in a dedicated bar at the bottom of the screen, enabling easy app switching, resizing, and maximizing with a single tap. This feature aims to provide quick access to apps like maps, notes, or tutorials without disrupting the main workflow.
A new tool known as Screen Reactions enables users to record their phone screen and front-facing camera simultaneously. This feature simplifies reaction videos by allowing users to overlay their commentary onto various content without the need for a green screen or switching between apps. Screen Reactions will initially be available on Pixel devices during the summer.
Android 17 introduces a foldable gaming mode that divides the screen into a top game view and a bottom gamepad panel, optimizing the full display on foldable phones. Users can also customize external controller buttons to suit their preferences. Furthermore, memory management has been enhanced to minimize frame drops and stutters during high-definition gaming.
Google has introduced several new controls to empower users with more control over their data. Users can now grant temporary access to an app’s precise location instead of permanent permission. When sharing contacts, specific entries can be selected without revealing the entire address book.
An improved Find Hub feature enables users to lock a missing phone using biometrics, preventing unauthorized access even if the thief has the passcode. Google has also implemented stricter measures such as reducing the number of PIN guesses allowed and increasing waiting periods between failed attempts.
Moreover, Live Threat Detection has been reinforced to block suspicious apps and scams, while Advanced Protection mode has been expanded to enhance security against sophisticated attacks.
Other notable changes include the option to hide app names on the home screen, a dedicated volume control for the Google Assistant, expanded customization settings for the dark theme, and the extension of parental controls to all Android devices. Performance enhancements include new app memory limits to prevent excessive RAM consumption, leading to improved speed and battery life.
Later this summer, select high-end devices will receive Gemini Intelligence, a suite of on-device AI capabilities designed to assist users throughout their day, although specific features are yet to be fully disclosed.
