“Google Unveils Chatbot ‘Switching Tools’ for Data Transfer”

Date:

Google has recently unveiled new features aimed at simplifying the process of transferring conversations and personal data from competing artificial intelligence (AI) platforms to its chatbot, Gemini.

The company has introduced “switching tools” that enable users to migrate stored information and chat histories from other chatbots. Users have the option to transfer complete chat histories by exporting them from other platforms and uploading them as compressed (.zip) files into Gemini. Several AI chatbot services, such as ChatGPT and Claude, already support the download of conversation logs in this format.

Once the chats are imported, users can access and search them within Gemini, allowing them to pick up previous conversations or review past interactions. However, Google clarified that only chat text will be transferred, excluding photos and files from other AI chatbots.

This system empowers users to transfer what Google terms as “memories,” which encompass personal preferences, relationships, and contextual information influencing a chatbot’s responses. Instead of manually re-entering this data, Gemini assists users in extracting relevant details from their existing chatbot.

Users are guided to input specific commands into another chatbot, which generates a response containing personal data. This output can then be copied and pasted into Gemini, facilitating the creation of a user profile based on previously shared information.

Google emphasized that this method aims to help Gemini swiftly grasp crucial aspects of a user’s background, such as interests and personal details, without necessitating a fresh start.

The introduction of switching tools coincides with the intensifying competition among AI providers vying for user engagement. In February 2026, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced that its chatbot had attracted over 900 million weekly active users and 50 million consumer subscribers. Meanwhile, Google reported that Gemini had exceeded 750 million monthly active users in its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2025 outcomes.
