Google has recently unveiled a series of major updates to its search engine, marking some of the most significant changes in decades. During the latest I/O conference, the tech giant introduced the integration of advanced AI agents directly into Search, along with a complete overhaul of the traditional search box, the first of its kind in over 25 years. Here’s a breakdown of the key transformations as outlined in Google’s official blog.
Google’s newest Flash model, Gemini 3.5 Flash, now powers AI Mode for all users worldwide. This enhancement is said to deliver continuous cutting-edge performance for agent-related tasks and coding inquiries within Search. The company reports that AI Mode has exceeded one billion monthly users, witnessing a more than twofold increase in query volumes each quarter since its launch, with total search queries hitting a record high last quarter.
The conventional search bar is being substituted with an input field that expands to accommodate longer and more intricate questions. This revamped feature accepts various inputs such as text, images, files, videos, and open Chrome tabs, while also providing AI-generated suggestions. The redesigned input box is being rolled out immediately in all regions and languages where AI Mode is accessible.
Search result pages are being transformed into conversational platforms. Users now have the ability to pose follow-up questions directly from an AI Overview and engage in a continuous dialogue with AI Mode, with the contextual information retained between interactions. Google asserts that supporting links become increasingly relevant as the conversation progresses. This conversational flow is now active globally on both desktop and mobile platforms.
Google is introducing ‘information agents’ that function continuously, monitoring the web for updates relevant to a user’s search query. Users can specify specific criteria, like housing preferences, and receive a synthesized notification when a matching listing emerges. These agents can also track noteworthy events, for instance, notifying a user when an athlete initiates a collaboration with a trainer. This feature will debut initially for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the upcoming summer season.
Search is now equipped to handle booking tasks that involve multifaceted decision-making processes. For instance, a query like finding a private karaoke room for six individuals on a Friday evening with late-night food services will provide pricing details, availability status, and direct booking links. In sectors like home maintenance, beauty services, and pet care, Google can initiate calls to businesses on behalf of users. These booking functionalities will be accessible to all users in the United States during the upcoming summer.
Leveraging the Antigravity platform and Gemini 3.5 Flash, Search can spontaneously generate customized visual responses like interactive simulations, graphs, and tables. These generative UI features will be offered at no cost to all users during the forthcoming summer.
For repetitive tasks, Search can create persistent dashboards or mini applications. For example, a user planning a fitness regimen could request Search to develop a personalized workout tracker that integrates real-time information such as reviews, maps, and local weather updates. This capability will be progressively introduced in the coming months, starting with AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US.
The expansion of Personal Intelligence, which allows Search to consider information from a user’s personal apps, is now extending to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages. Users can link Gmail and Google Photos, and soon Google Calendar, to enable Search to integrate personal context. This feature remains optional, and a paid subscription is not obligatory for access.
