The government is contemplating hiring approximately 9,000 religious teachers to enhance moral and religious education in primary schools, according to Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon during a parliamentary session. Milon acknowledged challenges in recruiting teachers, especially regarding the certification recognition from Qawmi madrasas. He stated that efforts are being made to address these certification issues to enable qualified candidates to be appointed as Islamic studies teachers.
Milon addressed a supplementary question from ruling party MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury of Cumilla-6, highlighting ongoing preparations for various reforms in the primary education sector under the new government’s 180-day program. He emphasized the government’s renewed focus on primary education, citing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s previous emphasis on the sector.
The minister mentioned receiving directives from the prime minister to implement significant changes in the primary education system, with a specific emphasis on enhancing students’ moral values and religious awareness.
