India, the defending champions, secured a 17-run victory against a determined Netherlands squad as they advanced to the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup. The Indian team scored 193-6 and restricted the Dutch side to 176-7, with spinner Varun Chakravarthy shining with figures of 3-14 in Ahmedabad. Having maintained an unbeaten record in their four Group A matches, India now faces a challenging encounter against South Africa at the same venue on Sunday.
Despite finishing on top of their group ahead of rivals Pakistan, India faces concerns in their batting lineup, particularly with opener Abhishek Sharma, who suffered his third consecutive duck in the tournament. Sharma was dismissed by off-spinner Aryan Dutt in the third ball after India chose to bat at the renowned cricket stadium.
India faced a shaky position at 110-4 before Shivam Dube’s aggressive 66 and a crucial partnership of 76 with Hardik Pandya (30) stabilized the innings. While several batsmen made promising starts, they failed to convert them into substantial scores. Dube showcased composure and power, reaching his fifty off 25 balls with some impressive hits including two sixes and a four off Colin Ackermann. However, both Dube and Pandya were dismissed in the final over, despite finishing the innings on a strong note.
In response, the Dutch openers cautiously began their innings, but Chakravarthy’s dismissal of Max O’Dowd for 20 and Pandya’s removal of Michael Levitt for 24 put pressure on the opposition. Bas de Leede and Ackermann attempted to stabilize the chase, but Chakravarthy’s mystifying spin breakthroughs disrupted their partnership. The increasing run rate forced the Dutch to take risks, resulting in wickets falling steadily, with Dube removing De Leede and Jasprit Bumrah dismissing Edwards.
Although Zach Lion-Cachet and Noah Croes put up a fight with regular boundaries towards the end, India’s substantial total proved too much for the Dutch team to overcome. Despite a couple of dropped catches in the final over, India secured the victory against the spirited Netherlands squad.
