Australia’s World Cup hopes have taken a blow as full back Jacob Italiano and seasoned attacker Mathew Leckie have been ruled out due to injuries, the Socceroos announced on Friday.
Italiano sustained an adductor injury during training after featuring in the initial group matches against Turkey and the United States, while Leckie suffered a hamstring strain during the U.S. game. Consequently, both players were absent for the crucial 0-0 draw against Paraguay that secured Australia’s place in the Round of 32.
Leckie, a key figure in Australia’s World Cup campaign, notably scored the winning goal against Denmark in the group stage, propelling the team into the knockout phase. Despite a season marred by injuries at Melbourne City, the 35-year-old was selected for his fourth World Cup appearance.
In response to Italiano’s absence, coach Tony Popovic reshuffled the lineup by moving regular left back Jordan Bos to the right flank to serve as an inverted wingback in the match against Paraguay. Veteran full back Aziz Behich filled in for Bos on the left side.
This tactical adjustment proved effective, with Bos delivering a standout performance in the goalless draw. His partnership with Cristian Volpato on the right wing created numerous attacking opportunities, earning praise from Behich, who commended the team’s preparation and execution of the tactical switch.
Australia will now have to rely on squad depth to compensate for Leckie’s absence as they progress in the tournament.
