Lavrov Urges Caution Amid US-Iran Tensions

Date:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a publicized interview on Wednesday, emphasized the grave repercussions of any potential new US military strike on Iran. He advocated for a restrained approach to resolve the situation and allow Iran to pursue its nuclear program peacefully.

Lavrov’s statements came following indirect talks between US and Iranian negotiators in Geneva, aiming to de-escalate tensions between the two nations. Expressing concerns about past strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Lavrov highlighted the risks of nuclear incidents and urged caution.

He pointed out that escalating tensions could undermine positive developments in recent years, such as improved relations between Iran and neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia. The White House also urged Iran to consider striking a deal with the US for a peaceful resolution.

While the US military reportedly prepared for potential actions against Iran in the coming days, President Trump had not made a final decision on authorizing such strikes. UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi acknowledged progress in the Geneva talks but cautioned about the urgency of finding a resolution swiftly.

A senior US official indicated that Iran was expected to present a written proposal to address the standoff with the US post-Geneva discussions. The US administration instructed military forces in the region to be ready by mid-March for any potential developments.

The US’s stance centers on Iran abandoning its nuclear program, which Iran denies is geared towards developing nuclear weapons. Lavrov noted that Arab nations were urging Washington to seek a balanced agreement respecting Iran’s rights and ensuring a peaceful nuclear program.

Lavrov reassured Russia’s continued communication with Iran’s leadership, expressing confidence in Iran’s commitment to resolving the issue within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In a separate incident, British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper criticized Iran’s sentencing of a British couple to ten years in prison on espionage charges, vowing to push for their release. Craig and Lindsay Foreman were accused by Iran of gathering intelligence in various parts of the country.
