“Leftist Alliance Rallies Against Foreign Takeover of NCT”

Date:

Democratic Left Alliance and Anti-Fascist Left Front came together today for a rally urging the halt of plans to hand over the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to a foreign entity.

The rally took place in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, with Democratic Left Alliance leader and Socialist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz leading the event.

Key speakers at the rally included Sazzad Zahir Chandan from the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Subhrangshu Chakraborty from the Anti-Fascist Left Front, Mushtaq Hossain from Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Prof Abdus Sattar from the Revolutionary Communist League, and Mosrefa Mishu from the Democratic Revolutionary Party.

Chandan criticized the government for pushing forward with the NCT lease proposal right before the national election, warning that it could lead the country into a perilous situation.

He emphasized that the current government lacks electoral legitimacy to make significant international agreements on behalf of the nation.

The speakers raised concerns that leasing port terminals to foreign companies could jeopardize the country’s independence, sovereignty, and security. They alleged that the previous authoritarian regime, which ruled for 15 years without democratic elections, compromised national interests in favor of Indian influences, while the current administration is accused of prioritizing US interests over the nation’s well-being.
