Legendary World Cup Goals: Stories Behind 2,720 Goals

Date:

Over the course of 22 FIFA World Cup editions spanning from 1930 to 2022, a total of 2,720 goals have been scored in 964 matches. Within these numbers lie iconic moments that transcend mere statistics and become legendary tales in the world of football.

Take, for instance, the unforgettable feats of players like Hakan Sukur, who astonished the world with an 11-second goal, and Just Fontaine, who borrowed boots and went on to score an incredible 13 goals in a single tournament. Then there was the young 17-year-old Pele, defying psychologists’ advice and leaving an indelible mark on Brazil’s World Cup history. From Roger Milla rewriting records at 42 to Cristiano Ronaldo showcasing unparalleled consistency across five World Cups, these stories of exceptional goals and scorers continue to captivate football enthusiasts worldwide.

Let’s revisit some of the most remarkable moments from these historic achievements.

World Cup: 1930

In a mere 19 minutes on July 13, 1930, Lucien Laurent etched his name in football history at the Estadio Pocitos in Montevideo by becoming the first-ever goalscorer in a World Cup match against Mexico. His goal was met with humble congratulations from teammates, marking a modest beginning to a monumental milestone.

Fascinatingly, Laurent was one of four players who shared a common profession in an automobile company and voyaged from Europe to South America by sea. Little did he know that his volley would go down as a significant moment in football history, despite his reluctance to discuss it in later years.

World Cup: 1958

Prior to the 1958 World Cup, Brazil’s team psychologist had reservations about including the “childish” 17-year-old Pele due to doubts about his mental fortitude. Disregarding this advice, Brazil’s coach fielded Pele, leading to a defining moment in football.

Donning the iconic No. 10 jersey, Pele showcased his brilliance by scoring a memorable goal against Wales, becoming the youngest goalscorer in World Cup history at 17 years and 239 days. His tournament journey continued with remarkable performances, solidifying his status as a football prodigy and earning him the title of the King of Football.

World Cup: 1958

Originating from Marrakesh in French Morocco, Just Fontaine arrived at the 1958 World Cup without his own boots, borrowing a pair from a teammate. Despite France’s loss to Brazil in the semifinals, Fontaine’s nine goals by that stage set the stage for a record-breaking performance in the third-place playoff against West Germany.

Fontaine not only surpassed the then-record of 11 goals but scored four more in that match alone, culminating in a total of 13 goals in a single World Cup, a feat yet to be equaled. His achievement remains a pinnacle in football history, especially in an era where six or seven goals typically secure the Golden Boot.

World Cup: 1994

On June 28, 1994, Oleg Salenko made World Cup history at Stanford Stadium in California by scoring five goals against Cameroon in a match with little significance for both teams’ tournament fate.

Salenko’s feat of five goals in a single World Cup match set a record, with his total of six goals earning him a share of the Golden Boot with Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov. However, a decline in form and disagreements with his coach led to Salenko’s abrupt exit from international football following the tournament.

World Cup: 1994

During the same match where Salenko shone, Cameroon’s Roger Milla created his own historic moment by becoming the oldest goalscorer in World Cup history at 42 years and 39 days with a goal against Russia.

Although initially retired from international football, Milla’s return at
