Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called on US President Donald Trump to treat all nations fairly following the imposition of a 15 percent tariff on imports in response to a negative Supreme Court ruling. Lula emphasized the importance of avoiding a new Cold War and refraining from interfering in other countries’ affairs, advocating for equal treatment among nations during a press briefing in New Delhi.
The Supreme Court, dominated by conservatives, recently ruled six to three that a 1977 law used by Trump to enforce abrupt tariffs on specific countries, disrupting global trade, does not grant the President authority to levy tariffs. While Lula expressed reluctance to comment on foreign court decisions, he expressed optimism that Brazil’s relationship with the US would soon return to normalcy.
The veteran Brazilian leader is slated to visit Washington for a meeting with Trump next month, anticipating a positive outcome from their discussions. Lula, aged 80, affirmed Brazil’s commitment to promoting peace, job creation, and enhancing the well-being of its citizens. Following a period of tension between Brasilia and Washington, ties between Brazil and the US have shown signs of improvement, with the Trump administration exempting key Brazilian exports from previously imposed 40 percent tariffs.
Lula stressed the importance of global peace over turmoil, emphasizing the need for stability in international relations. During his visit to India for an artificial intelligence summit, India and Brazil strengthened their collaboration on essential minerals and rare earths, solidifying their partnership through various agreements signed after talks between Lula and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
