Matt Henry shines as New Zealand dominates England at the Oval

Date:

New Zealand’s Matt Henry claimed crucial wickets of England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook at the Oval on Thursday, capitalizing on Glenn Phillips’s first Test century. England ended the second day of the second Test at 222-6 in response to New Zealand’s 391 in the first innings, trailing by 169 runs.

Henry, who struggled with back spasms in the previous Test, dismissed Root (46) and Brook (24) with lbw decisions, halting their momentum. The fast bowler finished the day with figures of 2-57 in 16 overs.

Reflecting on his performance, Henry expressed satisfaction with his contribution and praised the team’s ability to regain momentum. Root, leading England in his 65th Test, took charge after Ben Stokes was dropped for breaking curfew. Brook, England’s designated Test vice-captain, was not leading due to previous disciplinary issues.

After Phillips was dismissed for 100, Ben Duckett made a quick 36 before being run out by Nathan Smith. Gay and Bethell also fell to New Zealand’s bowling attack, with Gay scoring his second consecutive fifty in Tests.

Despite some aggressive strokes from Root and Brook, Henry’s bowling proved effective as he removed both batsmen. England’s debutant James Rew also fell to the Kiwi bowlers.

Phillips, who received support from Kyle Jamieson (41), dedicated his innings to his late father on the anniversary of his passing. The New Zealand batsman’s century marked a significant achievement, making him only the third Kiwi to score centuries in all international formats.

Jamieson was fortunate to survive a dropped catch by Duckett, as England’s bowling tactics were criticized for being overly reliant on short deliveries. Phillips reached his maiden Test century before being dismissed off Matthew Fisher’s bowling.

Overall, New Zealand’s strong performance with the ball and Phillips’s heroics with the bat dominated the second day of the Test match at the Oval.
