Meta Implements Limited Staff Cuts Amid Strategic Shift

Date:

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is undergoing staff reductions affecting several departments, as reported by Reuters. The layoffs, which are on a smaller scale compared to previous speculations of more extensive cuts, will impact the Reality Labs division, social media teams, and recruitment operations, as per The Information.

A Meta spokesperson mentioned that the company regularly restructures teams to align with its objectives and endeavors to explore alternative opportunities for affected employees. These layoffs are occurring as Meta grapples with escalating expenses related to substantial investments in artificial intelligence. Predicting expenses ranging from $162 billion to $169 billion for 2026, Meta is increasing employee compensation as it aggressively recruits top AI talent.

Earlier reports had suggested that Meta was considering significant layoffs affecting over 20% of its workforce, with senior executives discussing the plans with other leaders. However, the recent job cuts are notably less extensive. Meta had a workforce of nearly 79,000 individuals as of December 31, according to its annual filing.
