“Microsoft to Invest $10 Billion in Japan for AI, Cybersecurity & Workforce”

Date:

Microsoft has revealed plans for a $10 billion investment in Japan spanning from 2026 to 2029. The focus will be on artificial intelligence infrastructure, cybersecurity collaborations, and workforce development, as stated in an official blog post by the technology company.

This initiative follows a previous investment of $2.9 billion made in April 2024 and was announced by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith during a visit to Tokyo.

To enhance AI capabilities, Microsoft will partner with Sakura Internet and SoftBank to provide GPU-based AI computing services through Azure. Customer data will be kept within Japan. Additionally, Azure Local was expanded in February to support offline operations for organizations with strict governance needs. GitHub Enterprise Cloud now offers data residency in Japan, according to the company’s official communication.

Regarding cybersecurity efforts, Microsoft aims to bolster threat intelligence sharing with Japan’s National Cybersecurity Office and collaborate with the National Police Agency via its Digital Crime Unit. Microsoft will also introduce a $1 million research grant program and a fellowship to support Japanese researchers utilizing AI technologies.

In terms of workforce development, Microsoft plans to train one million engineers and developers by 2030 in collaboration with Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, NTT Data, and SoftBank. Around 580,000 workers will have access to AI-skilling opportunities through the Japanese Electrical Electronic and Information Union. Furthermore, Microsoft is expanding its CyberSmart AI Programme in partnership with the Kyushu Semiconductor Human Resource Development Consortium.
