Motie’s Spin Masterclass Leads West Indies to T20 Victory

Date:

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was the standout performer as West Indies claimed a 30-run victory over England in their T20 World Cup match in Mumbai. The West Indies posted a total of 196-6, led by Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive 76 not out and valuable contributions from Jason Holder. In response, England was bowled out for 166 in 19 overs.

Despite a strong start to their chase, England faltered against Motie’s skillful bowling, with the spinner dismissing key batsmen Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, and captain Harry Brook to finish with figures of 3-33. England went from 85-2 to 131-5 after Brook’s departure for 17. Sam Curran fought valiantly with an unbeaten 43 off 30 balls, but England ultimately fell short.

The victory marked West Indies’ second win in the tournament, positioning them favorably to advance to the Super Eights from Group C. England began their chase aggressively, with opener Phil Salt smashing 30 runs before falling to Romario Shepherd. Despite a promising start, England lost wickets at crucial junctures, including Banton and Bethell to Motie’s bowling.

Rutherford and Holder’s partnership in the death overs propelled West Indies to a competitive total. Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid impressed with the ball for England, but it was not enough to prevent the West Indies from clinching a convincing victory.
