In preparation for the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election and referendum set for February 12, the Election Commission (EC) has announced a nationwide ban on motorcycle movement starting from 12:01am on February 11 until 12:00am on February 13.

The EC released a directive on January 27 enforcing the ban two days ahead of the election.

During the period from 12:00am on February 11 to 12:00am on February 12, the movement of taxicabs, pickups, microbuses, and trucks will also be restricted. Moreover, launches and engine boats will not operate during this timeframe.

Exceptions to the restrictions will be made in specific emergency and special cases, as stated by the EC.

Vehicles exempted from the ban include those used by law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, and the administration; vehicles of accredited election observers and newspapers; emergency service vehicles carrying medical supplies; vehicles transporting passengers to and from airports with valid tickets; long-distance buses; one vehicle per candidate and their election agents with approval from the returning officer; as well as vehicles of BTRC and licensed telecommunications service providers.

Furthermore, the directive highlights the possibility of easing restrictions on national highways, ports, and major roads leading in or out of districts and metropolitan areas.

District magistrates or metropolitan police commissioners have the authority to adjust restrictions based on local conditions and requirements.
