“NCP Affirms Legal Validity of July Charter Reforms”

Date:

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has emphasized that the July Charter and its reform agenda have gained solid legal validity post the referendum.

NCP Convener Nahid Islam, during a press conference held after endorsing the July Charter, affirmed the certainty of implementing the July Charter. He stressed that the election and referendum processes were based on the July Charter Order, ensuring its enforcement.

For the upcoming parliament and government to operate lawfully, Nahid insisted on adhering to the referendum outcomes and the charter’s directives. He highlighted that the July Charter was introduced before the 13th parliamentary election and the national referendum, which validated the reform propositions. Consequently, the National Citizen Party is committed to participating in the parliament and actively pushing for the realization of the July National Charter and its associated reforms.

Regarding the delayed endorsement of the charter by the party, Nahid explained that the NCP had initially withheld support due to unresolved legal issues and the necessity for clarity on a dissenting note. However, the recent signing, without any dissenting note, is now considered a procedural formality, paving the way for the swift implementation of reforms aligned with the referendum order.

Nahid announced that the oath-taking ceremony, set for the next day, would involve elected representatives taking dual oaths — first as parliament members and then as Reform Council members, as specified by the Election Commission and the referendum order.

He indicated that the dissenting note concern had been effectively addressed through the referendum, establishing a solid legal foundation for advancing the reforms.

Nahid commended the interim government for taking charge post the July Uprising, managing challenges, ensuring a peaceful power transition, and successfully conducting the election process. He particularly lauded Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the interim administration for their roles.

NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, also present at the briefing, highlighted the successful conduct of the July Charter referendum. He mentioned that a delegation led by Nahid Islam endorsed the charter under specific conditions, emphasizing its full implementation in alignment with the referendum outcomes and without any dissenting notes.
