The National Citizen Party (NCP) officially endorsed the July National Charter yesterday, under the condition that the referendum outcome would be fully respected without any dissenting opinions.
The signing ceremony took place at the Jamuna state guest house, with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in attendance to witness the event.
NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossen represented the party by signing the charter, expressing that their previous hesitation was due to the lack of a confirmed legal basis and clarity on dissenting notes.
Nahid emphasized that signing the charter was a procedural step, done without any notes of dissent, to facilitate the smooth implementation of reforms as mandated by the public referendum.
Echoing Nahid’s sentiments, Akhter confirmed that they endorsed the charter without any dissent and with the expectation of complete adherence to the referendum results.
Notable figures present at the signing included Vice President Prof Ali Riaz, commission member Badiul Alam Majumdar, and the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider. The NCP delegation consisted of Monira Sharmin, Sarwar Tusher, Javed Rasin, and Jahirul Islam.
In a past statement, Nahid had emphasized the party’s stance on the need for a solid legal foundation before signing the July charter.
The July charter, initially signed by the National Consensus Commission and 24 political parties on October 17 at the Jatiya Sangsad South Plaza, welcomed another party a few days later, bringing the total to 25 signatories.
During the signing event, Chief Adviser Yunus expressed gratitude towards NCP for fulfilling the nation’s expectation of their endorsement, completing the July National Charter. He stressed the importance of utilizing the charter to construct a more compassionate Bangladesh through practical actions.
Chief Adviser Yunus also mentioned the upcoming oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected parliament members, extending well wishes for the future endeavors of all involved.
