OpenAI has officially announced the discontinuation of its Sora video platform, a tool that enabled users to create and share AI-generated video clips.
The team behind the product expressed that the decision to bid farewell to the Sora app was a difficult one. They expressed gratitude towards the users who utilized Sora, created content with it, and fostered a community around it, acknowledging the impact of the creations made using Sora.
This decision aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategic realignment. The company, known for ChatGPT, is now focusing its computing power and engineering efforts on enterprise tools and coding products as it prepares for a potential stock market debut later this year, as reported by Reuters.
Sora initially gained recognition in early 2024 for its ability to transform basic text prompts into high-quality, cinematic videos. In September 2025, a standalone app was launched, featuring a social feed where users could share their video creations, ranging from short films to animated sequences and reimagined scenes from popular movies and TV series.
In addition, this move marks the abandonment of a previously announced $1 billion collaboration with Disney, disclosed three months ago. The proposed partnership aimed to integrate over 200 Disney characters into AI-generated videos over a three-year period. However, sources familiar with the situation revealed that the deal did not materialize, and no financial transactions took place.
The decision to discontinue Sora came shortly after OpenAI released safety guidelines for the platform. Some members of the Sora team were reportedly unaware of the decision until the announcement day, according to insider information cited in the Reuters report.
OpenAI has assured users that they will receive detailed instructions on how to preserve their existing work and will provide closure timelines for the platform through an official communication on X.
